Dear Colleague,

We are glad to announce the workshop for Future of AI Research for Science in Japan (FAIRS-Japan) as follows;

Dates: December 3rd-5th (3days, Tuesday-Thursday) 2024

Location: KMI Institute at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan

Website: https://indico.kmi.nagoya-u.ac.jp/event/9/

Please register and submit your abstract no later than 17th Nov 2024.

Not in AI research? We need you! Please learn more about the workshop below :)

This is an "unconference-style” workshop where we advocate less verbal presentations and focus more on listening to your thoughts and discussions. For sharing your AI/ML research ideas and results outside discussion sessions, we strongly encourage you (everyone!) to register for poster presentations.  The workshop will focus on scientific fields including neutrino physics, cosmology/astrophysics, and accelerator science.

Detail Meeting Scope:

There have been exploding progresses made in Artificial Intelligence and

Machine Learning (AI/ML) research, and AI/ML applications are expanding

in all areas including science.

That said, we still ask questions daily:

  • What science challenges can we address with AI/ML and concretely how?
  • What AI/ML techniques are out there?
    • What are the science/principles behind and how can we decide/choose?
  • How can we start making concrete research impacts?
    • What do I need? Resources? Collaborations/networking?
  • .. and what are the answers to guide research directions in **Japanese** science communities?

We think our science domains (accelerator, neutrino, cosmology and astrophysics) can benefit from having a workshop to build the “future vision” of AI/ML for our community in Japan. This “vision” is meant to be the guidance for the community, individual researchers, and even funding agencies to share the coherent view of the most impactful AI/ML research opportunities.

To this end, we are initiating this event, Future of AI Research for Science in Japan (FAIRS-Japan). **Everyone** (not just AI/ML people!) in the community is invited to

build the future vision (see more on this below).

“Unconference Workshop”: No, this is not a typical conference/workshop filled with lots of talks. We have only a few talks to guide the discussions. The large part of the workshop (2 out of 3 days) focus on an “unconference-style” discussions where we focus listening to your thoughts and building the coherent view/ideas for the community.

To build the vision, we need you to participate and share your thoughts, questions, concerns, and insights to spark new ideas. Your voice and presence really matter. Please join.

No AI/ML knowledge/experience? We need you. Most definitely you will bring insights that AI/ML enthusiasts lack of. You represent the majority of our science domains, so you will lead building the vision.

Working on hardwares? We **very much** need you to develop how AI/ML can make your work more safe and efficient. Very little research is done in that area, and it means lots of opportunities.

Already working on AI/ML applications? Great! Please come and present

your research in the poster sessions. We don’t have talks in the workshop that showcase individual AI/ML research. We need you for everyone in the workshop to learn what kind of things AI/ML are capable of and already used for.

You are senior so skipping this? No way! As a seasoned researcher, you bring critical view and experience about the science challenges and why they are difficult to address. Please join to help guide your community and build the future vision.

Are you interested in helping to organize? Please reach out to us. For such event to succeed, we need LOTS of preparations so we can hope to converge the discussion in 3 days. During the workshop, we need good facilitator to spark new ideas and consolidate key points.

We very much looking forward to seeing you at the workshop.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the organizers at fairs-japan@ipmu.jp.

Best regards.
